Heat’s On Event Provided Veterans with Critical Furnace Safety Check-Ups

The 36th annual Heat’s On event, held on October 12, 2024, showcased the Madison Area Mechanical and Sheet Metal Contractors Association (MSC) and Steamfitters Local 601’s commitment to supporting veterans in need. The event saw over 60 volunteers service the furnaces of 56 veteran households.

During the event, skilled technicians performed vital checks on each furnace, ensuring they operated safely and efficiently. Two furnaces were identified as needing replacement, prompting follow-up visits to coordinate these crucial repairs. Hooper Corporation and 1901 Inc. are working with the veterans to schedule the replacements and address additional repairs that were not completed during the event. All services, including furnace checks and repairs, were provided at no cost to the veteran homeowners.

Veterans expressed their gratitude for the program. Army Veteran John Heintz praised the professionalism of the service technicians, saying, “They were very friendly, and this is a very good program. I hope you guys keep it up as a veteran. I do appreciate the service call and the professionalism of your guys.”

The Heat’s On initiative, which began in 1987, has serviced over 2,700 homes in Dane County. It was established after a tragic incident in which two elderly individuals died due to malfunctioning heating systems. Initially aimed at assisting the elderly, the program expanded in 2015 to include veterans, emphasizing the importance of warmth and safety during the cold winter months.

Veteran Karl Hacker echoed Heintz’s sentiments, stating, “Thank you again for servicing my furnace. The people were great. Can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner.”

This year’s event involved 13 local contractors: 1901 Inc., Air Temperature Services, Bassett Mechanical, Butters-Fetting, CS Mechanical, Grunau Company, Helm Mechanical, Hooper Corporation, IKM Building Solutions, JM Brennan, Lee Mechanical, The Waldinger Corporation, and Trane. Trucks for the technicians came from Trane, while supply houses First Supply, Gustave A. Larson, Johnstone Supply, and Temperature Systems Inc. donated the materials used to repair the furnaces.

Julie Walsh, Executive Director of MSC, expressed her appreciation for the support from volunteers, contractors, and supply houses. “We could not do this program without their dedication. This continues to be my favorite day of the year! This event is proof that acts of kindness can make the world a better place,” she said.

The technicians and volunteers, many of whom are veterans themselves, not only repaired furnaces but also enjoyed connecting with fellow veterans.

The Heat’s On event not only serves as a critical resource for veterans but also fosters a spirit of community and gratitude, reminding us all of the importance of supporting those who have served our country.
