Mental Health Awareness & Suicide Prevention in Construction Webinar on December 9 at 12:00 p.m. EST

MCAA and the Allied Trades Assistance Program are partnering to present this webinar addressing mental health issues in the construction industry, such as opioid addiction, suicide, depression, and anxiety. The webinar will highlight how work-related stress and anxiety have overtaken musculoskeletal disorders as the most reported workplace health issue. Mental health issues in construction can be just as dangerous as the industry’s physical hazards. And, according to the CDC, the construction industry is one of the most at-risk industries for suicides. Come join us to learn how to improve outreach, provide support, and remove the stigma associated with mental health issues to help your workers navigate this new hazard. The free webinar will be presented on December 9, 2020 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. EST.

Spotlighting 2020 MSCA Extraordinary Everyday Hero Awardees

MSCA has been honoring our industry’s very own everyday heroes for the past five years at the annual education conference. Our expectations were blown away by just how many heroes we have within our industry – we received nineteen nominations this year! We are so proud of the many peers among us who do extraordinary things every day, simply out of the kindness of their hearts with a passion to make a difference for the better.

Jeremy Carty, Warwick Mechanical Group, New Port News, VA

A team of Warwick Mechanical Group’s technicians, including Jeremy Carty, traveled to North Carolina during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic to assist local residents who had been displaced due to Hurricane Florence. The team spent a week doing rebuild and repair work related to their trade but also installed insulation, exterior sheathing, gas piping, flooring, drywall, and framing. They painted, hung cabinets and performed any other repair work needed.

Jeremy’s colleague and 2019 Everyday Hero Award Winner Michelle Collier commented, “They all came back talking about all the nice people they met and how satisfying it was to help these families get back into their homes.”

Jeremy has been on two previous hurricane relief trips. These trips were shortly after the storms and involved tearing out all the water damage walls, flooring and ductwork. These trips are really difficult not only because it is dirty, smells bad and everything is and has been wet for weeks but also because the devastation is still so fresh for the families.

Chuck Cholke, American Combustion Service, Mokena, IL

Chuck has worked continuously throughout the pandemic, taking on extra hours and picking up emergency work at hospitals and food manufacturers to keep them up and running while other employees were quarantined.  Chuck has put his on health at risk and has taken special precautions to stay safe for the customers and for his wife who has a weakened immune system.  The constant focus of remaining safe can wear on anyone, but Chuck continues to do what is neede for his team and customers.

“Chuck is always an above and beyond employee, but even more so during this trying time. He is a dedicated worker who does what is necessary without needing recognition,” shared his colleague Niki White.

Matt Smith, Mollenberg-Betz, Buffalo, NY

From day one of the COVID-19 Pandemic being declared, Matt Smith has gone above and beyond to ensure his team was safe. His top priorities were that his technicians in the field were safe and that Mollenberg-Betz’ business ran as close to “business as usual” as possible. While most of the office worked from home, Matt came into the office every day.  Often times taking on his colleagues’ tasks.  He constantly stayed in contact with the technicians in the field to ensure all customers were serviced.

Linda Scalzo shared, “He always puts all of our needs above his own.  He is a great boss and we all appreciate him so much.”

MSCA is proud to recognize these heroes in our industry and distinguish them as an MSCA Extraordinary Everyday Hero. We will be spotlighting each of these heroes over the next few months. For a full list of 2020 Extraordinary Everyday Hero Awardees, please click here.

Beyond the Classroom Video Series: The Benefit of Connecting with Industry Professionals

University of Missouri-Columbia mechanical engineering major Kylie Nedelka first learned about the MCAA GreatFutures program after hearing the association president speak to her class a few years ago. It was here Kylie realized the many benefits of being involved with the program.

“Networking is by far the best thing you can do in your career,” Kylie said while stressing the importance of building a professional network. Using her networking skills, she has landed two internships with SIEMENS, a member of the MCAA Manufacturer/Supplier Council. Kylie landed her first internship opportunity at the 2018 GreatFutures Forum while riding on a bus to Disneyland, where she shared a seat and struck up a conversation with Kristin Junia, Program Manager at SIEMENS. The following day, Kylie made sure to stop by the SIEMENS booth at the forum’s career fair. This is where she could talk more in-depth with Kristin about her education and internship interests and was offered an internship on the spot.

We hope Kylie’s story inspires other students to put themselves out there and not be afraid to talk to and connect with people within the industry, as you never know where it will lead!

You can read more of Kylie’s story here.

Ralph Caba, Donnelly Mechanical, Queens Village, NY

This past April, Ralph oversaw two projects that were an integral part of the emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic here in NYC, converting two facilities within Queens and Brooklyn into temporary field hospitals. With NYC being one of the first areas within the US to be hit hard by the pandemic, there were so many unknowns and it was truly an unprecedented time.  Ralph stepped up as the strong leader that the technicians needed to get them through the day to day while on the job.  Not only does Ralph have the technical skill but also exudes confidence and perseverance.  His motivating force helped get his team through this challenging, yet rewarding, job.

Ralph started his HVAC career as a service technician, where he primarily performed troubleshooting, installation and control work and has steadily progressed up the ranks to his current position as Field Supervisor.

“Ralph is a true testament that hard work and a strong work ethic pays off,” shares Donnelly colleague, Kaitlin Simensky.

Montavia Deloatch, Warwick Mechanical Group, Newport News, VA

A team of Warwick Mechanical Group’s technicians, including Montavia Deloatch, traveled to North Carolina during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic to assist local residents who had been displaced due to Hurricane Florence. The team spent a week doing rebuild and repair work related to their trade but also installed insulation, exterior sheathing, gas piping, flooring, drywall, and framing. They painted, hung cabinets and performed any other repair work needed.

Montavia’s colleague and 2019 Everyday Hero Award Winner Michelle Collier commented, “They all came back talking about all the nice people they met and how satisfying it was to help these families get back into their homes.”

As a single parent, Montavia manages to create time to speak with students at local high schools, presenting HVAC and other skilled trades as an alternative to college. Montavia also coaches recreational football in his community.

Sonny Webb, Tozour Energy Systems, King of Prussia, PA

Sonny handles an array of daily tasks for Tozour Energy Systems building operations, from working in the warehouse and managing vendor relationships, to making coffee for the internal office staff and staying on top of building maintenance. Sonny goes above and beyond in all of his tasks, even with the current pandemic, Sonny didn’t miss a beat. He often arranged for special PPE drops and coordination for field personnel, sometimes even during personal time.

His consistent follow-ups with management for after hours calls were always taken on with a positive attitude.  For many office personnel, returning to work after several months was an adjustment, but Sonny’s uplifting spirits eased the transition process for his colleagues, creating a more pleasant environment to come back to.

“The building and people here stay afloat due to the efforts Sonny puts in on a daily basis. He makes you feel safe and welcome,” praised colleague, Kelly Goldovich.

MSCA is proud to recognize these heroes in our industry and distinguish them as an MSCA Extraordinary Everyday Hero. We will be spotlighting each of these heroes over the next few months. For a full list of 2020 Extraordinary Everyday Hero Awardees, please click here.

OSHA Provides New COVID-19 Guidance Regarding Workplace Ventilation

OSHA recently issued new guidance on how to use workplace ventilation systems to reduce exposures to the coronavirus, including efficiency targets for air filters and recommendations for fan use. The guidance calls for employers to install HVAC filters with minimum efficiency reporting value ratings of “13 or higher, where feasible,” and to “consider using” high-efficiency particulate air fan and filtration systems, “especially in higher-risk areas.”

It also urges several stems to increase the flow of outdoor air into indoor areas, including increasing HVAC systems’ outdoor air intake; taking steps to verify that exhaust air is not being pulled back into a building, such as by traveling through open windows or nearby intakes; ensuring exhaust fans in restrooms specifically are “fully functional, operating at maximum capacity, and are set to remain on”; and opening windows and “other sources of fresh air” when possible.
